Furnace Won't Turn On? 7 Things to Check Before You Call

A furnace that won’t start on a cold morning is one of the most common — and most urgent — HVAC problems. Before you assume the worst, here are seven safe things to check. Many no-heat calls come down to something simple.

1. Check the thermostat

Make sure it’s set to Heat, the temperature is set above the current room temperature, and — if it’s battery-powered — the batteries aren’t dead. It sounds obvious, but it’s the single most common cause.

2. Confirm the furnace has power

Furnaces have their own switch — often a standard light switch on or near the unit — that’s easy to flip off by accident. Check it’s on. Then check your electrical panel for a tripped breaker.

3. Look at the furnace door

Most furnaces have a safety switch on the front panel that cuts power when the door is off or not seated properly. If someone recently changed the filter, make sure the door is fully closed.

4. Replace a dirty filter

A badly clogged filter can restrict airflow enough to make the furnace overheat and shut down as a safety measure. If your filter is grey and packed with dust, swap it and try again.

5. Check the vents and returns

Blocked supply or return vents can cause the same overheating shutdown. Make sure furniture, rugs, or boxes aren’t covering them.

6. Look for a blinking status light

Many furnaces have an LED that blinks a diagnostic code. Count the blinks and check the legend printed inside the furnace door — it can tell you (and a technician) exactly what’s wrong.

7. If you smell gas — stop

If you smell gas (a rotten-egg odour), do not flip switches or try to relight anything. Leave the home and call your gas utility’s emergency line or 911 from outside. This is the one situation where you don’t troubleshoot.

When to call a pro

If you’ve checked all of the above and the furnace still won’t fire — or you’re seeing repeated shutdowns, strange noises, or a diagnostic code you can’t clear — it’s time for a licensed technician. Igniters, flame sensors, and control boards are common, fixable culprits, but they’re not DIY jobs.
